Like a lot of things I've come to like over the past... decade of being online, I heard about Lost via my friends list. Mostly it was "Oh my God, Dominic Monaghan's got a TV show!", and as I hadn't really gotten into the Lord of the Rings movie mania, I wasn't all that thrilled. I got intrigued when I learned that the show was about a plane crash on a desert island. There are certain tropes that I love like crazy, and "being stranded someplace and having to survive" is one of my favorites. So I was like, "Yeah, okay, I'll give this a shot."
I don't remember watching the first episode as much as I remember watching the second. It was the second part of the pilot that, I'm certain, made me go I NEED TO WATCH THIS BECAUSE THIS IS A GLORIOUS BALL OF CRAZY. It had a few character reveals, a polar bear being shot, and the message on loop that everyone was dead. During the first half of the first season everything in my house would shut down and my whole family would be glued to the TV, something that we hadn't done together in ages.
I have a lot of good memories about the first season of Lost. It premiered during my first year of college, and I remember watching those first episodes with my family. We all gasped in surprise during "Walkabout" and even though "Confidence Man" is one of my favorite episodes, I will never forgive my parents for exchanging a knowing look during that part as we watched. I'll never forget feeling like my head was going to explode after the first season finale, and how that feeling kept coming up with every subsequent season finale. Lost was the first show that I liked that spawned a real, geeky kind of fandom rather than the merely squee-addled fandoms I'd been familiar with in the past. It's been a rollercoaster ride in a way, and I am seriously going to miss watching it when it's over.
