Cinephiles, I need your help!

I have to write a critical analysis for my Film as Art class. I decided on writing about musicals and their stylistic choices, and thus far I have only three movies in mind: The Band Wagon, Singin' in the Rain, and Moulin Rouge. For the sake of variety, I would like to add at least two to three more choices to my list. So what musicals would you suggest?

I'd suggest maybe Mary Poppins and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, so then you have something spanning the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 2000s. 1990s was kinda dominated by Disney animation musicals, I think.

Hmm...

Rent?

Piscilla, Queen of the Desert?

Idlewild?

Across the Universe?

Help! or A Hard Day's Night?

Fiddler on the Roof?

The Wiz?

The Muppet Movie?

Darby O'Gill and the Little People? Everyone should see this at least once anyway for Sean Connery singing.

The Jazz Singer?

Labyrinth?

Ned Kelly starring Mick Jagger?

Newsies?

Nightmare before Christmas?

Souther Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut?

Does Dr. Horrible count?

Okay, these are all musical films that I think are unique in some way and I wouldn't mind watching again.

Hmm. My Fair Lady, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Grease and Little Shop of Horrors (80s version), are all very different, stylistically speaking.

Do they need to be movies of musicals (like Chicago, Rent, Cabaret, Anything Goes, Hairspray, etc) or movie-musicals (like Mary Poppins, Bedknobs & Broomsticks, Singin' in the Rain, Newsies, etc) or movies that use music to further the plot/as musical revue (like Across the Universe, Moulin Rouge, Help!, A Hard Day's Night, Newsies, Purple Rain, etc)?

Either/or. We had to use a movie we watched in class as a basis for the paper, so I started with The Band Wagon and figured I'd expand from there. But I'm pretty sure that I could use the idea of the music moving the plot along as a point in the paper.

I think that you might want to consider switching Singin' in the Rain with An American in Paris, even though I like Singin' in the Rain better, An American in Paris changed the format of the movie musical and has been more influential in terms of Gene Kelly's stylistic approach.

In any case, you could maybe look at West Side Story for that era of film restagings, and I would definitely do either Rocky Horror or Jesus Christ Superstar for that era's emphasis on realism.

It sounds like a really interesting paper!
