So, health issues! I've been seriously considering birth control for a while now, not because I'm in any way sexually active but because in the past six months my period has been giving me issues that I have not had with it since, God, I first started.

Today I ended up leaving work early because after break I threw up and started feeling faint. I've always dealt with nausea during previous periods, but little in the way of actually throwing up--well, not since I was about eleven and I remember my first few periods being marked with killer cramps and barfing in the middle of the night, and being allowed to stay home (and subsequently spending the time after I stopped feeling like death warmed over playing Super Mario 64 and eating baloney sandwiches).

But in the past six months I've thrown up around the second day or so at least three times and after that's over I usually feel ridiculously weak and lightheaded. Before, the nausea and throwing up and everything happened when I was home, fortunately on my days off or right before I had to go in, so I had time to call out. This was the first time it happened when I was away, and as if it wasn't bad enough that I was shaking and feeling horrible locked in this stall one of the front end girls heard me and... I don't know, there's something particularly awful about someone else hearing you throw up. I felt just as bad about leaving because I'd only been back about forty-five minutes after my break and I wasn't supposed to leave until five.

I've just had it with the vomiting, and the gas, and the cramps. I just have no idea where to start, though. I'm definitely going to try to schedule an appointment with my doctor soon, but since I'm still on my parents' insurance, I don't know how to approach the topic with them, because they're a little old school and I'm sure that they'd assume something else is up. I don't know; sometimes I'm grateful that I'm still covered with their program and other times I wish I had my own plan so that I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Check for PCOS. Heck tell your parents it's for PCOS.

Yeah I would go to the doctor first before bringing birth control up to your parents and see what he/she advises. If he/she advises birth control then you can tell your parents that it wasn't your idea, it was the doctor's and it's for your medical condition.

I got birth control in college years before I even had my first date with a boy. It was just to control my cycle. My mom understood and wasn't worried because hey, I wasn't dating anyway! I don't think I bothered to tell my dad because that's not the kind of stuff he wants to hear about.

Good luck, I hope you feel better!

My parents are Catholic and I felt a little awkward about talking about birth control with them, but I had godawful cramps every month -- severe pain that had me hospitalized once -- and so going on BC was a really good option for me. Definitely stress the medical problems you've been having; that's really important to get to the bottom of.

I started BC last August when I was seeing my friend-with-benefits, but I've stayed on it despite the fact I haven't been sleeping with anyone since mainly because it's done wonders for my cycle. Like you, I sometimes have awful nausea and fatigue during my period - I'd say one cycle out of every three. But barring some problems with spotting since I started Loestrin my period has been practically asymptomatic, which as you can probably guess is awesome.

At the very least, I think you definitely need to talk to a doctor about the issues you've been having, since having such stronger symptoms all of a sudden, even if you have had them in the past, could mean something is up. (It probably doesn't, but never too careful, right?) As for your parents...all you really can do is stress that you want the pill for health reasons, since that is the truth. My mom knew why I wanted to get on BC and was cool with it; my dad thought I wanted to try it to help control my acne, something I'm known for having a history of problems with.

Wow, that's awful. I'd definitely go to the doctor's and soon about this and see what they say. You shouldn't have to deal with this monthly!

I had such crippling cramps in high school that I would have to stay home from school once a month. It was so bad it was actually my mom's idea to put my on birth control. It took a while to find something that worked for me because of my other health issues (I can't take oral birth control due to the hormones), but now I love it. I've had spotting up to a regular period twice since I've gone on it, but it's really not that big of a deal because I had no cramps whatsoever. Also not having to buy tampons every single month is a wonderful wonderful thing.
