well, today I talked to my councelor about Columbia, and I got to look at the figures for the average first year student and all that jazz there. Okay, WHERE are all these smart people coming from?! Lordy! I KNEW it was selective, but *&^%!

Ms. Breen isn't going to be happy that she filled out that teacher reccomendation for me. (she was my psychology teacher when I was a sophomore and she's one of my favorite teachers EVER.) But, you know... my chances are slim. The other four schools I'm looking at are good, and I, you know, have a chance at getting in there. (Elon, GMU, Sarah Lawrence, and Ithaca)

So, it's no biggie. Columbia wasn't the be-all and end-all of my college hopes. I'll try and be happy wherever. But... oh, to say I went to an Ivy... *sighs*

And it's freakish of me to have top choice schools that are all on the East Coast and all private institutions, right? I didn't intend for it to be like that, but...

Anyway.

I went shopping on Saturday and came back broke. Money just vanishes on me. Sucks. But hopefully Mom will give me some and I'll be able to get some other random stuff, and of course I'll have to save some for next Tuesday, when Mr. Aiken's album drops. (who came up with the term "album drops"? It's so weird, it sounds like a P. Diddyism...) Yeah. I really need a job.

I'm going to be checking out The Great Gatsby to try to see if I can actually have time to read it. We were supposed to read it in English last year but we didn't get that far. And I'm checking out East of Eden because I want to figure out what all the talk is about. (yes, I want to read it because of the Oprah Book Club. I'm a loser.) Maybe I'm trying to challenge myself after reading Because I'm Worth It. Heck if I know.

I talk entirely too much.

I know how badly you want to go to Columbia, and I am SO NOT raining on your parade, but don't sweat it, hon. The honest truth is that two years after you graduate, not a soul in the universe cares where you went. All that matters is the degree. Unless you're entering some HIGHLY competitive job field, going to an Ivy League school doesn't matter at all. Promise.

Do yourself a favor and read The Great Gatsby. It's one of my favorite books ever. It's brilliant and wonderful and there are so many references to the novel in pop culture now that'll make so much more sense when you read the book. It starts off really slow, but once you get past the first third of the book it starts moving and it's excellent.

But to sum up: this is my favorite book ever and you should read it.

During sophomore year, my english teacher had us read an article about how an Ivy League college really doesn't matter that much in the long run, it just matters on what you learned with your time in college.

With that said, I still think that if you really want to go to Columbia, then go for it. There is definitely always that chance you'll get in, so just submit the application and go!
