After reading every post on the American Girls thread at Fametracker forums, I'm thisclose to starting an American Girls community. Why? Because I can. And there's no other community for them!

I read every book for the five girls that were out in... 1996. I was a little American Girls freak. It all got started when I discovered the Addy books when I was about seven. I got the second and third books for my eighth birthday, and I got the doll that Christmas. The next Christmas, I got the Molly doll. So, yeah, I was one of those little girls who wanted everything for the dolls, even though the whole collection (doll, clothes, all the books AND the other props) was almost $1000. One day, when I am filthy rich I will buy all the American Girls stuff I want. [rubs hands together evilly]

I know it's sad, but as much as I love the movie Signs, it makes me very very paranoid. I can't watch it at night (like I did last night) because I have to go from the den to my room, and everything in between is pitch black, and I am always terrified that something will leap out of the shadows at me. Last night my brother and I were watching it, and he paused it on the scene where they're showing the footage of the alien in the alley, and we freaked out. This didn't help me sleep at all. I'm such a kid it's ridiculous.

I used to feel snobby about the irrational spate of American Girls stuff that's on the market now. I've almost come to a place of acceptance, though. When I was 10 (in 1986) I got one of the very first Samantha dolls made. She's numbered in the 300s of the very first ones made. Back then the catalogue was only about 20 pages and the only dolls were Kirsten, Molly and Samantha. I kinda miss those days. There's just TOO much stuff now.

I had NO idea AG had been around that long! Wow.

My first one was Addy. Don't know the number though. But when I kind of lost a little interest they'd just introduced Josefina, and now they have the other girls and the Girl of Today and... it's just... overkill.

(psst, the WB made a TV movie about Samantha! It's going to be out this winter!)

I think the company started in the mid 80s, probably around 84-86.

oh gosh, i was such an american girl addict. i have both the samantha and molly dolls and whenever i got the catalogue, i would go through circling everything that i wanted lol

now i look at all the new stuff and it makes me a bit ill

My first grade teacher had a Molly doll but my parents never ever bought me one of the dolls because they knew that I would break it, which I probably would have. I think I still have my books somewhere. I remember when it was a big deal when the one in 1776 started (I think her name was Felicity?). Anyway, there's just way too much commercialism related with them now.

And someday I will have that Molly doll. Oh yes.
