Aug. 26th, 2005 10:43 amI am at the library right now, and I am terrified that I killed my computer.
The details: last night I was trying to burn a CD on my computer (a Compaq Presario, with Windows XP on it). I also tried to log online, but for some reason, the browser wouldn't open, and the media player that pops up when I put in the CD I wanted to copy froze on me. I logged out of my account and then logged back in. I tried opening the browser again and it didn't open. So I tried to restart the computer. As I did, a dialogue box to end some program popped up. For some reason, my computer does this, so I clicked the X in the corner. When it started again, I got frustrated and pressed the on/off button to restart.
But when I did this, a black screen asking if I wanted to set the computer to three kinds of safe mode, or use the previously used settings, or if I wanted to just start Windows as normal. No matter what I chose, I would get the Windows XP opening screen and it would go back to that screen. It did that about fifteen times until I turned off the computer and monitor. I even turned off the power strip, hoping something would happen. And this morning I tried it again, and I'm still getting the same message.
If I have: I'll get over it.
I can download all the Photoshop goodies again. I have half of them on CD, anyway. I can get back the MP3s. I had too many, anyway. I uploaded most of all my pictures to Photobucket, so that's okay. I'll be pissed if I've lost some of my saved IM conversations, because--good times, y'all. But the thing I'm scared about is losing my text files. Most of those are just things like fan fic and what have you, but I also have some other ones I never really got to put on disk.
Just... pray I didn't mess it up, mmkay? Or else I will be a Very Sad Candice.

Date: 2005-08-27 05:22 pm (UTC)Do you have a reboot floppy disk? If you don't, you can borrow someoene else's AS LONG as they have the same Win XP.
Reboot the PC with it, and do a complete scandisk on DOS. Computer off, put in disk, turn on PC, it'l boot from the floppy disk; it asks you how you want to start the computer, and the first item says "HELP". If you want (and you should do it at once in your life :) ), select that (using number pad on your keyboard), read. Then quite.
Then it's DOS. Don't freak! it says this:
A:\
click C then : then Enter
it should look like this
C:\
meaning you've left the floppy disk, and are in your C drive
then type this
scandisk /surface /all
notice it's word SPACE dash
enter
It'll automatically start scanning your PC, it might take an hour or more, depending on how big your drive(s) is (are). It might ask you what to do several times, just keep saying "Correct" and if you have enough floppy disks available you can save the files it'll ask you whether you want to save or delete or something (I never save them, but that's me).
BUT (huuuuuuge BUT here) I do this because I have very good anti virus protection, and firewall, and I know at all times I don't have virus.
Do talk to a tech. But don't worry much. You'll be alright. You wallet may not, but...
Sorry for being so long...
