Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to go into the archives of my journal and pull out a random quote from some time, some year, and then my job will be to see if I can remember what I was talking about. You tell me if I'm remotely right or wrong.
Nope, I can't peek, and you'll have to trust I won't. :)
Please don't pick a quote that's so random that it could apply to anything, like "feh" or "Damn it!" or something equally generally. Pick something that might actually be about something, but not so blatantly about something that I'll have to guess what I'm talking about.
*--in my case, I've been writing for four years. But I'm gonna limit you all to the past two years, just for fun. Hee.
When I get bored, I tend to do random things, and this is a result of boredom. I introduce...
I said I was gonna do this when the DVDs came out, but I didn't. Might as well do it now.
The Beginner's Guide to Lost
show overview: to steal a line from myself: there's two ways to describle Lost. The first: it's kinda like Gilligan's Island (minus the kooky antics and guest stars) plus The X Files (minus Scully and Mulder), divided by The Twilight Zone (creepy stays intact). The second is like describing a bad word problem: a plane leaves Sydney, Australia, and somehow veers thousands of miles off-course. It breaks up and crash-lands on an uncharted island. Forty-eight people survive and must deal with the consequences. How many of the forty-eight (or, rather, the primary fourteen) will survive?

24. Exodus, Part II/May 25, 2005 (Jin, Charlie, Hurley, Locke, Michael, Claire)
the characters:
heroics gives a great, detailed character description. Though, things of note, since this goes up to "Do No Harm" (ep 20):
--in episode 21, we find out that Sayid was in Australia to help the FBI (or some federal agency) get an old friend of his (who was going to do a massive act of terrorism). In exchange for this, the FBI would allow Sayid to see Nadia. The friend found out who Sayid was working for and shot himself. Oh, and on the island: Shannon shoots Locke (as she blames him for Boone going all dead-like) and the bullet grazes Locke's head. Locke tells Sayid that he was the one who bonked him on the head way back in ep. 7. Claire's baby (who Charlie has nicknamed Turniphead) won't stop crying, but Sawyer's Accent O' Hottness makes him calm down.
--in episode 22, we find out the backstory for Kate's airplane. It belonged to her childhood best buddy (possible sweetheart) Tom, who she briefly reunited with when she found out her mom (stepmom?) was dying of cancer. In the end, Kate ends up trying to avert the feds again and in the process the feds shoot at the car she's driving (Tom's--he's in the passenger seat) and they shoot him so Kate's somewhat responsible for him being dead. On the island: Kate's trying to get on the raft, but Sawyer's not having it. At the end he reveals that she's the criminal to everyone and they're all, "SHUN" to Kate. Oh, and at the end Kate and Sawyer have this fireside encounter in which he tells her that there's "nothing on [the] island to stay for." (to some, this is like the ultimate blowoff; to others, it's a verreh pointed comment).
--I pretty much detail everything that happens in episode 23 here.
--episode 24: Artz goes explodey! Danielle takes Claire's baby! The monster is some kinda freaky thing that makes a reeling in noise! Hurley sees the numbers on the hatch before it's blown open and begs Locke and Jack not to blow it open but they do anyway. Oh geez. Charlie and Sayid go to find Danielle. Sayid cauterizes a wound on Charlie's head and Charlie screams bloody murder. Danielle says the others were "after the boy". Claire names the baby Aaron. Oh God. On the raft o' DOOM: Sawyer sings a snippet of a Bob Marley song (and the fangirls swoon). The rudder comes off and Sawyer dives after it. Sawyer reads the messages in the bottle and tells Walt he's gonna kill somebody once he gets back. Crikey. The guys think they're rescued with this boat of creepy-looking fishermen pull up next to them, and this creepy bearded guy is all, "We're gonna have to take the boy." Everyone collectively WTFs and they snatch Walt, shoot Sawyer, and throw some bomb thingie and blow up the raft. Back at the hatch, Jack and Locke peer down it and it goes on FORFRIGGINGEVER, and that is where they will pick up on Wednesday.
must-see episodes: so, okay. I'm kinda biased in the episodes I consider must-sees, but here goes my picks anyway.
Pilot, Parts 1 and 2: sets the tone for the show, and reveals some of the bigger things that come into play, like the message recorded by Danielle, The Others, Kate's criminal-ness, Charlie's Drug Problem, the polar bear, and Vincent the Dog's constant running off.
Walkabout: in which we learn that Locke was in a wheelchair pre-crash. Threw me through a loop.
Confidence Man: I had a hard time choosing between this one and "Outlaws"--but I picked this one because there's just So Much Stuff Going On. The A-plot (Sawyer witholding the inhalers, the letter, the torture scene, the kiss, the reveal that Sawyer's not his real name) rocks, and the B-plot (Charlie trying to get Claire peanut butter) is just friggin' adorable. Doesn't answer the questions, but it's a damn good episode.
Raised By Another: the introduction of creepy!Ethan. And more creepiness regarding the Claire-baby.
All the Best Cowboys...: or: The One That Almost Killed Lost. The pivotal point: Kate and Jack find Charlie hung from a tree, dead. Jack gets him down and tries to bring him back. No response. Kate is freaking out real good and Jack is whacking Charlie on the ribcage. And somehow, this excessive whacking does not injure anything on Charlie, but it brings him back to life. This is the episode in which Boone and Locke find the hatch.
Special: in which we find out about why Michael and Walt have a very estranged relationship. And Walt has some creepy powers that have not fully been explained yet--and at the end, Locke and Boone find Claire.
...In Translation: Jin's flashback episode, which changes our previous perception of him as potentially abusive husband. Plus, the final montage when Hurley's CD player batteries die is great.
Do No Harm: or: The One When Boone Dies and Claire's Baby is FINALLY Born. Jack tries to save Boone. Kate has to deliever Claire's baby. Boone dies. Everyone fawns over the baby, and Jack is all, "this is Locke's fault! Kill the Locke, kill the Locke, kill the Locke!" And Kate is like, "With what?" And Jack responds, "My sword and magic helmet." Or not.
Exodus, Parts 1 and 2: the end of the Long Strange Trip that was the first season.
ways to catch up: ways to get caught up with everything that is happening with the show before Wednesday (a tall order to fill)
--the DVDs are available at many fine stores, but if you're not willing to shell out cash for a show you may or may not have ever seen before, head over to Blockbuster and see if you can rent them.
--you can read recaps. TWoP is the most-well known place for recaps. But I reccomend
cleolinda's recaps of episodes 1 through 20, because not ONLY are they hilarious, they are pretty danged accurate in describing everything that's going on. And then there are
foresthouse's recap of the last four episodes, which are also verreh, verreh good.
what's happening in season 2? stuff that I've heard so far.
--Ana-Lucia (who showed up in a Jack flashback in "Exodus, Part Un") is gonna be one of the tail people. And she's going to make the Triangle o' DOOM into a "trapezoid". ACK.
--more new characters: someone named Libby, who's supposed to be a psychologist, and a guy who's rumored to be a Nigerian drug smuggler. He's played by a guy who was on Oz, Harold Perreneau's (Michael) old show.
--another character, a female, is supposed to die, presumably in October. Right now, everyone's money is on Shannon. Which makes me sad, as I've started to like Shannon a little.
--whatever is in the hatch is going to seriously wreck havoc on the island.
--more Sun/Jin screentime.
--Locke's supposed to have a "love interest". (Danielle? Is it Danielle?)
--a possible Kate/Sawyer hookup. It's semi-unconfirmed, but I've been hearing it a bit, so I thought it might be worth a holla.
--in the first episode of the season, Shannon's supposed to see Walt walking through the jungle. (!!!)
There's many more, but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head right now. Ack.
lost-isms: random terms that I say, or that others say in reference to the show or characters. Ones said by me, in my infinate dorkiness, are italicized.
--Triangle o' DOOM: in reference to the love triangle that consists of Jack, Sawyer, and Kate.
--Turniphead: Charlie's nickname for Aaron.
--black button front o' sex: in reference to the black button front shirt that Sawyer wears quite a bit. I love that danged shirt.
--Kate Notingsale: nickname that comes from
cleolinda's recaps, as some have noted that Evangeline Lilly looks a bit like Kate Beckinsale.
--Mercutio: nickname for Michael, who played Mercuito in the '96 Baz Lurhuman version of Romeo and Juliet. You know, the one with Leo.
--Craphole Island: Shannon gives her place of residence as this in episode 10.
--Snickerbitch: Shannon. Another nickname originating from
cleolinda's recaps.
--OMGWTFPOLARBEAR/S!: another one from the Cleo recaps. Is a very handy thing to say. Or shout.
And... that's pretty much it. And I apologize in advance for the semi-non funniness of this. My sense of humor's kind of... shot tonight.
