enamouredSo I went and saw Skyfall, because it's in IMAX at the theater at the mall. I kind of wanted to go to the midnight show for a minute, but I didn't have anyone to go with and did not feel like putting up with anyone's crap about it.
I am really, really ashamed when I realized that there was a reason why all the midnight shows started at 12:07. I mean, really.
SO, MOVIE. IT WAS REALLY REALLY GOOD. Like, I still love Casino Royale, and while I don't think Quantum of Solace was terrible, I don't think it was all that great either, so there's that. But Skyfall! The first... ten minutes alone are paced really well, and plunges you headfirst into this world. Great hook.
And now it's time for the random spoilery stuff going on here. Seriously, if you do not want to be spoiled at all, DO NOT CROSS THIS LINE, YOU WILL BE SPOILED. In no particular order:
Dude, Silva is super-duper creepy and awesome. That scene when he's got Bond tied up to a chair and is being hardcore skeevy and touching him? And then when Bond is all, "It wouldn't be the first time"... you could take that so many ways. (My initial thought: Well, at least this one's not whacking him in the balls.)
Honestly, though, this movie was basically "Bond gets hit on and/or has chemistry with everyone." Except I'm not seeing anything at all between Q and Bond. New Q is adorable and geeky, though. I love how during his first meeting with him Bond was all, "You're the quartermaster? What are you, twelve?"
SPEAKING OF CHEMISTRY: I finally started to get why some people are on board with Bond/M. Like, I kinda sorta saw it in CR and QoS, but that first scene when he shows up at her house again, they sounded like an old married couple. And OH MAN, when she dies at the end? I CANNOT. I was starting to get the feeling that Mallory was going to be the new M, and I knew that I'd heard something about Judi Dench wanting to retire, but I was still not quite expecting that.
(Also, this whole movie really makes me want to finally finish the Avengers/James Bond crossover I started about a month ago--I'm running with someone's headcanon idea that M is Peggy Carter, and with the way that Skyfall ended, there could be so much angst coming from that.)
And so many nods to classic Bond! The theater all collectively gasped when the Aston Martin showed up. There was a very subtle one with Silva talking about the fifty year old alcohol, and more overt ones, like the car and the door to the office, and then, of course, Moneypenny. Who I love. I was all but shrieking WILL YOU TWO JUST DO IT?! at some points.
Finally: one of my absolute favorite scenes in the whole thing? When Bond is fighting one of the bodyguards in the pit, and as he's fighting the guy he sees the komodo dragon and he has this look on his face like, Is that what I think it is?, and then when the guy tries (and fails) to use his gun, he's like, Yes, it is, and your ass is about to be eaten by a huge-ass lizard. Daniel Craig's face at that point is hilarious.
In other news: I saw the trailer for Warm Bodies, and I am suddenly really excited for it. Looks fun!
