Apr. 23rd, 2009 11:05 pmWhoa, Geocities is closing! Remember back in the day (before Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and even LJ) when everybody had their own site and it was either hosted on Geocities or Angelfire? Ooh, and remember Homestead, with those fugly banners across the bottom, or Envy.nu, which just upped and died that one time, or GurlPages? I had two sites on Angelfire, but I switched to Geocities because I hated Angelfire's pop-ups.
Good times, man.
But of course, now there's Google Sites (which I sometimes use and is okay, but not very customizable) and free sites that are mostly addless, like Ripway, if you feel so inclined to make a free website. Sometimes I get a little nostalgic for a pre-blog, pre-LJ internet--but then I remember that damn near everything I read/watch/like is mostly on here, or IJ, or Tumblr, so I'm good.

Date: 2009-04-24 04:28 am (UTC)Yeah, I kind of miss the days too when you had to beg people to host your site and when I actually knew HTML, tables, stylesheets, etc. Now with LJ, I can just hit send and ta-da! It's posted!

Date: 2009-04-24 04:58 am (UTC)I just had to go into my delicious account and save the Geocities pages contained therein (most of which are NSYNC fanfiction archives from WAY WAY back in the day that I will probably never read again, but can't just allow to disappear).
I tried to make a Homestead page once, and just haaaaaated working with its horrible interface. I hated going to the fanfiction pages that were made with Homestead, too. Does it still exist? I should check.
... Ick. It does.

Date: 2009-04-24 05:15 am (UTC)Although the only pages that are working are those for Lois Lane*, Em*, and the two miscellaneous stories. It sucks, because Rhys* apparently took her website down, and so it is archived NOWHERE and did I mention the
cryingpoutingstompingreasonable amount of grown-up suffering?* All of whom may be authors that only I remember, to be sure.

Date: 2009-04-24 05:35 am (UTC)(Also, I am now Wayback Machining the crap out of NSYNC fanfiction, because I will not let my old favourites go gently into that good night.)

Date: 2009-04-24 05:44 am (UTC)But where will I go to read my favorite *NSYNC/BSB fan fiction with basic tables and midis?

Date: 2009-04-24 05:56 am (UTC)(Oh man, I hated the sites with midis even then. Before the site would finish loading the music would start and it used to piss me off.)
