Oct. 21st, 2009 12:31 pmI don't know why I was thinking about this, but: asking anyway.
What were your school lunches like? Did you have to bring your lunch to school or did you buy it?
When I was in Catholic school, we had this deal on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays when we would get food from outside vendors like Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, or Subway, and Friday we always got pizza. Even on those days I would bring drinks (Hi-C or Capri Sun) or desserts from home. On other days, my dad or mom packed them. I remember one time my dad was out of town and my mom, in a bid to try to get my brother and I to eat fruit, cut up apples, tossed them in a Ziploc bag, and dumped in Jello mix over them. At lunch that day, I opened up my bag of now-blue apple slices and everyone (including the mom of this one kid in my class who was a volunteer lunch monitor) stared at me like I was crazy.
Then when I went to public school I sometimes took lunch and sometimes bought snack food from the vending machines. In eighth grade, before I moved, the school cafeteria had these little square pizzas that I liked for some reason, even though they were like 60% bread, 10% sauce, and 30% cheese/toppings. So I'd eat my lunch from home or eat a pizza and buy Fruit by the Foot or something. And then once we moved, I'd get one of those Fruitopia drinks from a vending machine (do they still make Fruitopia anymore? I loved their fruit punch) and a bag of pretzels and chocolate chip cookies. They had food kiosks in high school and I steadily ate from the Pizza Hut one up until junior year, when I discovered the $1.75 salads in the cafeteria. They were usually fresh every day and had chicken or turkey in them and they were HUGE. I miss those salads.

Date: 2009-10-21 06:22 pm (UTC)In high school (public school), I always brought my lunch unless they had these things called italian dunkers, which were just garlic bread with cheese on it and you dipped it in marinara sauce. Nick still makes them sometimes (we went to the same school) because it was both of our favorite lunches.
Cool topic!

Date: 2009-10-21 09:04 pm (UTC)There always was just one meal to pick from (and something different for ones with allergies etc) - soups, potatoes (usually) or pasta (rarely) with some kind of meat, casseroles etc and super super rarely during some theme days something neat. Some bread on the side - most often näkkileipä and always salad or some veggies. Water, milk or buttermilk (I ...think that's the correct translation) to drink. Some kind of dessert perhaps once in a week/two weeks.
I can't complain about our system (well, I suppose I could... it's not like I'm not going to be funding this thing as a tax payer for the rest of my life) but whenever I watch a movie or a tv episode about American schools and their lunches I feel left out. >_>
