food food om nom nom. and flames.
Jan. 20th, 2010 11:15 pmYesterday I made salmon cakes (which were pretty good, by the way) and I almost burned down our kitchen. Here's what happened:
I had this crazy urge to try to make them, because they're one of my favorite dishes that my mom makes. So I looked up a recipe and everything was going well until it came time for me to put the frying pan on the eye. I think I'd turned the eye on to medium high, and I'd already poured the oil in the pan and I put the pan on with the grease spatter screen over the top because I hate when you're cooking and grease stops popping up. It freaks me out.
So I was standing up next to the stove, rolling the salmon into patties when all of a sudden the grease in the pan just went FWOOM!
Fortunately, because the screen was over the top, the flames weren't really going very high. I called my dad over, and I was trying to not freak out too much and not grab the pan and stick it in the sink, because water and grease fires just end in disaster. A box of baking soda and a smoky kitchen later, everything was under control, and I finished making the salmon.
This is why I do not cook on the range. If you pop something in the oven, your chances of setting the house on fire are significantly lowered.
