Because I A.) am a follower sometimes and B.) don't post as much as I liked to, I am going to do that 30 Day Meme.
Day One: Favorite Song
Always Be My Baby, Mariah Carey
I like to believe that everyone who loves music can remember that one singer or that one band that was like their gateway drug to music, the one that made your perspective on it shift from "oh, okay, this is music and that is a song" to "wow, I like listening to music and songs." For me, that singer is Mariah Carey. I was ten years old when this song was released as a single, and during the summer of 1996 it was everywhere. That summer, incidentally, was the first time that I was becoming more aware of the music that wasn't what my parents listened to in the car, the R&B and soul from the '60s and '70s; or the music that my older cousins adored, which was usually early '90s R&B and rap. I don't remember when I heard "Always Be My Baby" for the first time, but what I do remember was associating it with this boy I had a crush on at the time. My mom dubbed a copy of Daydream on a blank cassette for me and I remember barely listening to any of the other songs on it (save for the other singles: "Fantasy", "One Sweet Day", and "Forever"--which was a single, just not one of the #1s from that album) and fast-forwarding to get to that one song.
Fifteen years after, I still feel good whenever I hear the opening bars. I have other favorite songs, but this is the one that always makes me smile; the one that reminds me of just when I started to love music and that sometimes, it's not always a "serious" artist who can get you to that point. My musical tastes have changed and Mariah isn't my #1 favorite singer ~OF ALL TIME~ any more, but I will never not be fond of her music in one way or another.
