Can somebody a little smarter than me please explain the Orphan Works Act? Because the way that some people (including this person) explain it, you'd have to copyright even your own personal writings because, oh noes, someone might steal them for their own! I read something somewhere that said it wasn't quite like that, and before I tell everyone to chill about it, I want to be able to explain it right.

I am going to have to get a new MP3 player. My Zen might be beyond helping, and if I get it fixed it might cost as much as getting a completely new one. I still don't quite want to get an iPod, so I'm checking out other players on Anything But iPod. I don't know what to get, I just want something with a good amount of storage space (8GB or higher) that won't crap out on me after six months, and I'm apprehensive about buying another big Creative player because of what's happened with mine.

OpenCongress says this about H.R. 5889 (The Orphan Works Act):
This bill would limit the amount of damages a copyright holder could collect from an infringer if the infringer performed a diligent search for the copyright holder before using their work. The goal of the legislation is to free up for reuse copyrighted works whose holders cannot be found. It would also set up a process for the Copyright Office to certify commercially-produced visual registries to help people locate the holder of a copyright and prevent the orphaning of works in the future.

There's also another version floating around in the Senate.

[livejournal.com profile] foresthouse has a couple of good posts on the subject. You will find a lot of doomsday wankers on the internet for this topic.

i had a Zen, until I dropped it once too many and it was completely ruined. And yeah, it would've cost 90 bucks to fix it :x

i recently got an ipod touch because i plan on getting a macbook (ONE day) and the ipods (sadly enough) only work with the mac os, nothing else does.

my friend has a Zune, and they seem pretty cool. naturally, you should do more research, but i think that a zune is a good medium, but i think it cost as much as an ipod. though i'm not completely sure.
